Dog sports, Including obedience dog training

"Obedience dog training"
Training a pit bull puppy or adult in obedience dog training can be a a time consuming as well as a lengthy process. This however depends on the particular dog. Every dog learns at a different rate. Some are more easily trained than others. The training methods, learning level, as well as the talent that the trainer and handler, all come into play when training your dogs. The level of how well you want to have your dog trained also comes into play when factoring the time it will take. It is not true that you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Older dogs can be trained very easily in the right setting with the right methods and trainers. However, you will benefit from starting at a younger age. Younger dogs pick up on training a bit faster, just like babies can learn multiple languages easier than adults.
  • Protection sports (including Schutzhund Service Dogs Of America and French Ring Sport)
Schutzhund test many breeds of dogs for police type work. This breeds mainly include pitbulls, German shepherds, and Labrador retrievers. These dogs that pass the Schutzhund tests are eligible to work in many areas such as odor detections (Bombs, Narcotics, Search and Rescue), protection work, fugitive work, as well as many other fields. The traits that these dogs need to posses are :
  • Drive (Desire to work long and diligently)
  • Intelligence
  • Perseverance
  • Strong bond formed with the master
  • Protective intuition
  • Workability
  • Train-ability
Rally obedience (also goes by Rally-O or perhaps Rally) is a canine sport based solely on obedience. This sport originated by Charles Kramer when he used the obedience practice known as "doodling". Doodling is a free style warm up exercise that has a variety of commands. Unlike regular obedience (Where you wait for the Judge's command) the competitors go through numerous obstacles while the dogs are in a heel position. The course has around 10 to 20 signs that let the team know what do to do next. The handlers are also allowed to talk and encourage the dogs while they go through the course (Unlike traditional obedience)

There are for separate bodies of rally o in the USA. There is the UKC (The United Kennel Kingdom) link:www.ukcdogs.com, The American Kennel Club (link:AKC), the APDT, and the C-Wags also known as the Canine work and Games. Also, there is the association of Pet Dog Trainers which is the APDT. Further more the UKC recently added rally obedience to their list of programs as of January '09. AKC rally is open to all pure breeds as well as mixed breeds that are registered with the AKC as well. During these events each team starts with 100 points. Points are then deducted by the judge for every mistake that is made. Once you qualify three times under two separate judges, your dog then earns their title. These titles appear next to the dog's name on their registration papers (pedigree papers). Each qualifying event earned is called a "LEG".

The larger breeds consists of German Shepherds, American Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Doberman Pincher, as well as Mastiffs. Smaller breeds of dogs as well as toy breeds can still participate in a number of sports. However, it is recommended they participate in a sport more suitable for their size.
