Most people purchase a pit bull and have the expectation of it being a easy dog to train or even a low maintenance dog. This couldn't be further from the truth. Pit Bulls can be an easy dog to own, however it take hard work. This a very powerful breed of dog. Without the proper training and discipline, these dogs will not only walk all over you, they may even become aggressive and injure another dog in the neighborhood.
Dogs, when in the wild, form packs. These packs have a totem pool so to speak which they abide by. There is a pack leader, second in command, third, fourth ext. In order for you to properly train your dog, they need to know you are the pack leader and you are in charge. You can start this exercise by taking walks with your dog. When you walk your dog, you must always walk in front of him or her, or beside her. In the wild the dog that walks in the front of the pack, is always the pack leader.
In the wild dogs will walk up to 5 miles a day. In reality, most people do not have enough time to walk this far every day with there dog. However, at least a half hour walk is needed per day. This is the first step in showing your dog that you are the pack leader. Tip: when exiting the house make sure you are the first one to exit the house. This is the first step in showing who will be in control the walk.
How many times do you see a dog that looks like it's taking it owner for the walk and not the other way around? This is a clear sign that the dog not on thinks they are in control, they basically are. This can lead to you dog becoming over aggressive with other dogs or possibly even people.
