While some dog fanciers prefer the show ring, others prefer a more strenuous work out like pulling weights or sledding. Dock jumping also known as dock diving is a dog sport in which dogs will compete by jumping off of a wooden dock into water. This is usually judged by the distance the dog will jump.
A team consists of a single dog, of any breed or size, and usually a single handler. In some cases the event will have two handlers. The dogs must be at least 6 months of age in order to compete. Unlike weight pulling events, the handler is allow to use a toy to lure the dog into the water. The dogs are not required to retrieve or chase the toy. However, no points are deducted if they do retrieve it.
Conformation shows, also referred to as breed shows, are a type of dog show in which a judge with trained eye evaluates individual purebred dogs for how well the dogs conform to their particular breed standard. Conformation shows are held by the United Kennel Club, ABKC for pit bulls (American Bully Kennel Club), as well as the AKC (American Kennel Club). These registration clubs also hold many show events that are not limited to one specific breed, but rather all breeds of dogs.
Weight pulling is a dog sport involving a dog pulling a cart or sled loaded with weight a short distance across dirt/gravel, grass, carpet, or snow. It is a modern adaptation of freighting, in which dogs were used as freight animals to move cargo from one point to another. A variety of breeds take place in this sport, with dogs being divided into classes by their weight. Sleddog and pit bull breeds often excel within their respective weight classes, having been historically bred to pull sleds and plows, respectively. As of today, The American Pit Bull Terriers have dominated this sport taking just about every title in every event.
Schutzhund (German for protection dog) is a dog sport that was developed in Germany in the early 1900s to test whether German Shepherd Dogs shows the traits that are fit for police type work, rather than just basing off of the dog's appearance and conformation. Today, many breeds other than German Shepherds can compete in Schutzhund, but it is a demanding test and not all dogs are cut out. Recently many American Pit Bull Terriers have proven to be excellent in this sport.
Protection sports are dog sports that test a canine's ability to protect their self as well as their handler's. When dealing in protection sports, the actual test is based on the complete temperament of the dog, not just the dog's protectiveness level. The dog must be safe to the public as well as their handler. This means the dog is only showing defense towards the attacker. A true protection dog must have a stable temperament and detect real threats. They also must be in control by command at all times. That means releasing when told, attacking when told, ext. All protection sports are base on how police dogs are used in one way or another. The grandfather of all protection sports is the Belgian Ring. It's the oldest and one of the most difficult defense dog-sports in the world. It is completely dominated by the Belgian Shepherd breed. Also known as a Mechelaar or Malinois. At a first glance you would not know the difference between a Malinois and a German Shepherd.
