The breed is thought to date back to 3000 BC, as ancient drawings on rocks seem to
resemble them. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), the earliest known writings
referencing Great Danes dateback to 1121 BC. The Great Dane that is around today
originated in the 1800s from a mixture of Irish Wolfhound and Old English Mastiff. They
were bred to hunt, specifically wild boar. Great Danes are known under several different
names and nicknames, including: Gentle Giant, Dane, Deutsche Dogge (German Mastiff
Dogs) and Danische Dogge (Danish Mastiff).
Great Danes are part of the AKC working group and were first recognized in 1887.
The working group is defined as dogs that were bred to perform jobs, such as
guarding property, pulling sleds and performing water rescues. They possess
considerable dimensions and strength. According to AKC standards, the minimum height
for males should be 30 inches tall at the shoulder and 28 inches at the shoulder for females.
Danes appearance should be regal while presenting strength and elegance despite their
massive size. They should never appear clumsy, and there should always be a distinct
difference between males and females. The males would have a larger and heavier bone
structure and appear much more muscular.
The Great Dane has made a likeable impression upon owners and outsiders alike.
The popular children’s cartoon, Scooby–Doo, was created in their liking and
reflects their general personality. Marmaduke, the popular newspaper comic,
made its main character a Dane. The Great Dane is also greatly loved in Pennsylvania,
as they were named the “state dog”in 1965. The University of Albany adores
them as well, as their mascot is the mighty Great Dane.
