Siberian Huskies- Husky Dogs
The term Husky is used to refer to a variety of sled dogs who originated in several northern regions of the world. Today, these dogs continue to serve in their traditional roles but also can be found as family pets. The term was actually a corruption of a derogatory term, “Eskie,” which was also used to refer to Esquimaux tribes that Europeans encountered in their early explorations. Many people will recognize the most popular types of this overarching breed – The Alaskan Husky and the Siberian Husky. These dogs also tend to make good pets, but they are best suited for experienced dog owners. They will try to assert themselves as the alpha member of the family unless they are instructed otherwise by their owner. One very intriguing fact about these breeds is that they are known for commonly having different colored eyes.

The Siberian Husky is a breed of working dog that originated in Siberia. They somewhat resemble wolves, since their markings are very unique. They belong to the Spitz family of dogs, and can be easily pinpointed by the markings on their thick double coats, sickle tails and triangular erect ears. This is a very hardy breed of dog, being that they were brought up in some of the roughest terrain on earth. Not only did they originate as working dogs in harsh environments, but they were used to pull heavy loads through the snowy land. Over time, they were sent to Alaska as sled dogs, and now can be found in family homes throughout the United States, Canada and beyond.

The Siberian Husky descends from a breed known simply as the original sled dog. DNA evidence has proven that this is one of the oldest breeds of dogs. Today, they are one of the most recognizable and honored dog breeds around. The famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race commemorates a 1925 delivery of Diphtheria serum carried out by several teams of mushers and Siberian Huskies. A film, Balto, has even been made about this epic journey. About 50 of these dogs also participated in Operation Highjump, a 1933 expedition to Antarctica. They also proudly served in the United States’ Army Arctic Search and Rescue United during WWII. Clearly, these dogs have been prominent throughout history and honored for their service.
You can quickly pick out these dogs by their distinct coat. Many Spitz breeds share similarities. The defining qualities are their markings and coloring. The coats tend to be black and white, gray and white, or copper and white, but other rarer varieties such as pure white can be found. They also tend to have striking mask markings on their faces. The most noticeable aspect of the Siberian Husky’s facade is their wolf-like appearance. In fact, these dogs are known to howl instead of just barking.
Siberian HuskiesSiberian Huskies can make great pets, but it’s important that they are trained correctly. They’ll need obedience training as well as plenty of play and exercise. Because of their sled dog history, they have been described as escape artists who could wander miles away if their owners are inattentive. They have even been known to climb chain link fences when bored or curious, so it’s especially important to keep a watchful eye on these dogs. As evidenced by their ability to make such clever escapes, these dogs are quite intelligent. They need both physical and mental stimulation from their owners and families.

The Alaskan Husky can’t necessarily be called a true breed of dog, but rather a type of category of sled dog. This term can refer to the Malamute, Mackenzie River Husky or Eurohound. These dogs are by far the most coveted type for use in sprint dog sled racing. They consistently win over other purebred breeds. This is because they possess huge amounts of toughness and endurance. They can race at speeds of up to 19 miles per hour, and this isn’t for any small length of time. They can keep this pace for 3 days, running around 30 miles each day! Because of the ultra competitive nature of dog sled racing, these dogs are worth plenty of cash. Some of the top dogs in the field might be sold for as much as $15,000!
These dogs tend to be very recognizable. The Alaskan Husky can have a superficial resemblance to the Siberian Husky. However, Alaskans (being that they aren’t exactly a true breed) can come in a rainbow of colors. Obviously their coat markings are of no importance to a musher. Since speed is the ultimate desire for these dogs, their hardiness falls short of that seen in the Siberian Husky. Due to this, Alaskans often wear dog booties and coats when racing in super cold conditions.
The temperaments of Alaskan Huskies come in as wide a variety as their rainbow of coat colors. Generally speaking, though, these are very affectionate dogs. They have a tendency to want to cuddle with dogs and people alike. In fact, a puppy may even go up to a dog he doesn’t know and start to cuddle. These are also very active and athletic dogs. You should be sure you are ready to keep up with them if you decide to add an Alaskan to your family! It’s also important that you have plenty of room to exercise these pups. Urban apartment living is definitely not for the Alaskan Husky.
