Any growl is usually a sign of aggression and you want to correct the dog immediately and let them know that it is unacceptable. Otherwise, it may escalate into them actually biting someone eventually. Give them a firm "NO", then make your hand act as a dog's mouth biting their neck. This will not hurt the dog, however it will show that you are the dominant one and their behavior is unacceptable. This is the same way mother dogs correct their puppies when they are playing too rough.
